Betty--
As to dividing Asters in the fall - if it is a fall blooming Aster (most are)
you should not divide it now. Plants use a lot of energy to produce flowers.
When they are blooming there is not much energy left over for putting down new
roots and settling into a new site. This is why most experienced gardeners
try to avoid buying new perennials while they are in bloom. (Sometimes I do
it, but usually keep them in their pots until they finish flowering.)
However, one usually can get by with planting flowering plants in the spring
because environmental conditions are so conducive to plant growth then.
Conditions are much harsher in the fall though. It is really best not to take
a chance then.
So spring is the recommended time to divide Asters. Your friends will
probably not mind waiting until spring if they understand the reason. --Janis

I have a large cluster of these asters and would like to separate it. I
had planned to do it in the near future, but something I saw in a post this
morning made me think perhaps this should be done in the spring. Anyone
have any experience to share? If at all possible, I would like to do it
this autumn since I have promised to share with some friends and I'd rather
not renege on my promise.
