Purple Dome Asters

I have a large cluster of these asters and would like to separate it.  I
had planned to do it in the near future, but something I saw in a post this
morning made me think perhaps this should be done in the spring.  Anyone
have any experience to share?  If at all possible, I would like to do it
this autumn since I have promised to share with some friends and I'd rather
not renege on my promise.
