I leave the stalks of my perennials as long as I can - 'til spring
usually. I like the way they look covered with snow (coneflower heads
look like little faces with white hats) and by leaving them, my shredded
leaf mulch seems to stay put a little better, instead of blowing away in
the wind. Come spring time, they will have bent over, or broken off and
are easily tidied (gives me an excuse to be in the garden when there's
nothing to do but hope for new growth). They also serve as a reminder of
what is where, should I happen to forget.
