gardening gloves (was show of hands)

I take great interest in how people can stand to wear gloves, and, if they
do so, what kind. Over the years friends have given me gloves, saying you
will find these are the best ever ...... it never happened, and my hands
and nails were proof positive. I don't mind the stain and the rough nails,
but my skin was often cracked and sore.

One day, I happened (can't remember how) to garden wearing what I call
'little old ladies church gloves". They are finely tailored, synthetic,
and often stretchy. You must know the kind ~ traditionally they were
white
and some have little pearls or fancy stitchwork at the wrist. ;-) I find
them at a local thrift shop and now have a number of them in a bag which
hangs at the front door. I just grab a pair as I head out the door.

These gloves are not an encumbrance and though you can't really feel the
soil and the plant, it is the next best thing to naked hands. As you get
into a gardening session, the gloves inevitably get wet and soil will
adhere to them, but none of that seems to matter. Your hands do get wet,
but your skin is protected. Because they take the shape of your fingers,
you can prune, deadhead, dig, weed....all of it, wearing these gloves. If
they are really muddy ~ rinse your hands and gloves under the hose before
throwing the gloves into the wash. (At the end of a good gardening day, I
usually have 2 or 3 pair in the laundry basket.)

Somebody else mentioned putting lots of hand cream on before you put your
gloves on ~ that's a good idea, too, though I rarely remember.

Oh, one last point to recommend these gloves. My burlap glove bag by the
door sports gloves of various hues ~ purples, orange, green, pink, brown,
red. It's fun!

I have passed this on to a number of friends locally, and there is now
great competition for gloves at the thrift stores!
