Jackie:
Some of the pennisetum grasses grow in zone 4 and up and some don't.
According to my book, Moudry is hardy to zone 6.
It does list several ornamental grasses for shade as follows:
Carex spp. (Sedges)
Chasmanthium latifolium, (Wild Oats)
Deschampsia caespitosa (Hair grass)
Hakonechloa macra
Hystrix patula (Bottlebruss grass)
Imperata cylindrica (Japanese Blood Grass)
Luzula nivea (Snowbird, snowy wood rush)
Panicum clandestinum (Deer tongue grass)
I don't know if any of these are hardy in your zone. One would have to check
each one individually to see. Maybe someone on the list might have some
comments or experience with some of them.
I have the Japanese Blood Grass and it grows really well in the shade but of
course doesn't get very tall.
