I really like the varigated Tartarian dogwood shrubs.  They get about 6
feet high and 6 feet wide in less than half sun (they can be pruned hard
to keep smaller shapes, though).  I like the varigated quality because it
sets off dark perennial foliage (or lighten up a darker part of the yard)
and has the added bonus of the bare twigs being red during the winter.

I've found that, if given good water and shade during the summer, they
don't look ratty until just before they shed their leaves.
