Walnuts -& not off-topic

>>I'm wondering if being within 10 feet of the edge of the black walnut tree
has anything to do with it's approaching demise, but the other lamiums don't
seem to be affected. However, two of the sedums I bought and planted there
(both
semi-shade plants) are looking a bit bed-raggled, too.>>

Lisa,
You are probably right. Black Walnuts are territorial creatures. They emit
phytotoxins which prevent other plants from invading their space. This
phenomenon is called allelopathy. Hickories, fescue and some herbaceous
plants are also allelopathic. This is a great feature for survival of the
species, but not so much fun in a garden. Then again, it could be useful in a
garden to keep weeds down. But in this case, it might be best to move those
Lamiums and Sedums before the bit bad Walnut gets them!
