bed renovation (again)

I'm finally about finished with soil in my revamping project. A lot of
work digging in the clay, I had to do it pretty much a few inches at a
time, with a hatchet to remove tree roots that had taken over. I did
manage to find some gypsum locally (thanks Jean, for the suggestion) and
added compost and composted manure. It did make for a nice
conversation piece while the work went on. I think everyone in the
neighborhood stopped to ask me why I was digging a big hole in the front
yard.

Now, for the next step: selection and planting. I want to plant in
colors to coordinate with my interior scheme (yeah, my husband thinks
I'm crazy, too, and we're fighting right now over whether or not he can
plant purple tulips there.) The colors are mostly blue, salmon, gold,
and a terra-cotta or brick red. Now, we've had discussions in the past
on blue and salmon and I plan to go to the archives to resurrect that
information. Does anyone have suggestions for the orangy-red?

Also, this bed lines a sidewalk, and is about 30 ft by 4 ft. How would
be the best way to arrange the planting to minimize the straight,
regimented appearance--which is, incidently, exactly what my husband
wants to do with his purple tulips, line them up and use a ruler for
spacing. You know, it'd be a shame if he went to all that work and the
squirrels ate all the tulip bulbs...hmm...

Appreciate your help, you guys come up with the best ideas!!

but with it 70+ degrees at midnight tonite, I'm skeptical)
