I got up this morning determined to rake leaves.
South West BC CA. In the Fraser Valley.
We've had a touch of frost. Not much rain. Leaves are dry. And the
buddleia still in bloom as well. Amazing. Wonderful days.
I'd looked at a 30" plastic leaf rake the week before but decided I could do
without it. But this day deserved a new rake! I went to the hardware
store.
The store next door was having a giant pumpkin contest. Lots people.
Little kids running around. Hay bales piled up. Pumpkins everywhere.
As I'm paying for my rake, one of the clerks pointed out that a giant
pumpkin had rolled off the back of a pickup truck and was blocking traffic
on 272nd. We all went outside. Clerks, cashier, customers. Everybody.
Sure enough. Great big pumpkin in the middle of the street.
And a small pick-up truck, backing up in right hand lane, eventually
stopping along side the pumpkin.
An older brother, a mother and a younger sister, get out of the truck and
survey the situation.
Mother stand in middle of road and directs traffic. Brother rolls pumpkin
to curb. The pumpkin didn't seem to be damaged.
Poor little sister -- obviously her pumpkin -- stands on the curb crying her
eyes out.
A passing stranger helps load the bulging beige vegetable into the back of
the truck once again and they made their way slowly into the parking lot.
Mom was laughing as I drove off. And I think the little girl had stopped
crying.
It's a great day. Still a lot of leaves to rake! :-)
Donna.
