<I have just collected two pods full of seeds from my lilium formosanum
priceii & I'm now thinking "now what?"
Any tips on germination & getting seedlings (ever optomistic) through
the winter? how long before they flower?>
Karen:
I am not certain whether you received an answer to this question. This
species is a simple warm germinator, so you have the option of keeping
the seeds until mid-winter and sowing indoors under lights. They will
require a minimum of about 4 weeks at 20C. I have raised many over the
years, and they are at various stages in the garden.
Or, if you prefer, you can simply allow the plants to self-sow outdoors,
in situ and they will germinate next spring-summer and do just fine on
their own.
I am in Zone 4 Canada and this species is supposed to be marginal for
me here. However, the plants have not heard this rumour.
The bulb for this species is quite large & I am guessing will take 4-5
years to flower. Each year, until the bulb is large enough to flower,
the plants will simply send up foliage. Some of my 4 year plants looked
at though they might "do it" this summer, but alas, I was foiled. I
anxiously await year 5 for the glory of about 50 plants in full bloom.
This is truly a spectacular lily!!!!
Cheers.
