Moss prefers shade and moisture. If you have it, you can use the
information from a posting that I made in 1998. I've included a copy
drawn from the archives at

Oooh, all kinds of stuff. Mother-of-thyme, soapwort, snow-in-summer,
candytuft, dianthus, various wormwoods, alyssum (as a self-sowing
annual), veronicas... That's it off the top of my head.

There was something about this on the alpine-l mailing list back in August
of 1997. To feed existing moss, someone mixed buttermilk with equal parts
of water and sprayed it directly onto the stands.
To start the moss off (paraphrased from the aforementioned threads on
alpine-l):
Mix a 1" square pad of moss with 1/2 cup buttermilk and 1/2 cup
water, then paint onto a presoaked rock or trough. Keep shaded and
moist.
There may be problems with raccoons initially, so the rocks may have
to be covered with chicken wire until the buttermilk is gone.
