Jean...

It almost sounds like one of the many species of Cassia, but Zone 6 would
be too cold for most of them, except, perhaps, Cassia marilandica.  Was
this a woody perennial or herbaceous.   The herbaceous C. marilandica can
reach almost 5 ft.  It is sometimes called Wild Senna.
