Annuals = Plants that complete there life-cycle in a single season, that is
from seed germination to mature plant (Flowering) and seed production and
then death (Do to physiological responses).
Perennials = which take more than one growing season to grow from germination
to flowering plant and flower over a few to many years before death.
Bienneuls= Grow foliage the first year and "bolt" the second year to flower
and after flowering and seed production die.
Monocarpic plants= Take a number of years to grow from seed before flowering
and after flowering and seed production they die. (Some forms of bamboo,
century plant, Hen's and chicks plus many more)
A species of plant can be all of the above, with some individual plants true
annuals while others of the same species are perennials or biennials.
