Diluting the lime isn't as messy as sprinkling on the soil.  On a windy day
like it is here today, diluting it with water makes application much easier.
Since it rained last night, it will penetrate the soil that much faster and
be available to the plants more rapidly.  Diluting also doesn't leave a
powdery look to your soil.  Just a matter of taste here, that's all.

Thanks to those of you who reminded me to tend to other alkaline lovers as
well.
