Karen, you raise a very important question. Limestone is so plentiful around
here that I have not given much thought to the need to conserve it. But we
should never take natural resources for granted.

Bonemeal, crushed oyster shells and wood ashes can all be used to raise soil
pH. A great way to recycle fireplace ashes is to use them as a topdressing
on lime-loving plants.
