This has raised a thought - is this another aspect of
gardening/agriculture which we should be thinking about in terms of
conservation? Just as we all get concerned about digging up peat
bogs, however small our individual consumption, the total effect is
devestating. Similarly, all the lime that ends up crushed in bags and
boxes has to be quarried out of the hillsides.
I get to feel guilty here on several counts; as a rock climber who
specialises in limestone routes, I am concious of how my travel to the
crags and up them causes erosion, and as a gardener, I know I probably
contribute to the horticultural use, albeit inadvertantly.
Selfishly, I love limestone in its native habitat, and the plants that
grow on it in the wild. Is there an alternative to crushed limestone?

Ginny,
Pardon my ignorance, but if I wanted to go buy some of this lime, what
would I ask for?

No pardon needed! What you are looking for is calcium carbonate
(limestone), which is sold at garden centers in crushed form and usually
labeled 'agricultural lime'. It should be easy to find, and isn't expensive.
If you can find it, calcium magnesium carbonate (dolomitic limestone) has the
added benefit of magnesium.
