Val,
If your Mom's friend's tree blooms in spring, she probably has the Golden
Chain Tree, Laburnum. The blooms of this one are hanging, and I believe
it's poisonous too, so small children shouldn't be allowed to play
beneath it. The Golden Rain Tree, koelreuteria paniculata, blooms in July
here, has upright panicles of small yellow flowers, and the seed pods
look a lot like Chinese lantern, with black berries inside.
