I think you're right, Marge.  For nematodes (underground) I think the theory 
is there is some secretion from the roots.  On the bright side, however, I 
don't think any of my visiting deer have ever chomped a marigold!  But it 
doesn't seem to stop them from chomping what is next to the marigolds.
