Re: Favorite Spring Perennials

Forrest,
this is gonna be a hit and miss effort, because I'm not sure I can get
the time frame right, but I'll give it my best shot.

during the month of March everything starts (of course everything
depends on our weather, seems every year it's differant)

early spring::::
first my Forsythia and dafaodills are in bloom, and I have oddles of
them everywhere.
Then the saucer magnolia, royal star magnolia.
and it seems I loose them to frost almost every year (our weather
pattern again)

April::::::iris, siberian iris, bleeding heart, weigela, astilbe,
carolina jasmine,
I don't have many roses, but most of them are early bloomer, some of
them are 1 time bloomers, and some of them have a later and longer
blooming season.

May::::::azelias, (I have over 100 of the azelias) hydrangea,
amaryllis, mini amaryllis, columbine, foxglove, dogwood trees, calla
lilies, daylilies, stella de ore

June:::::::snowball bush, gardenia, redbud trees, poppy, larkspur,
shasta daisy, coreopsis, clametis, wisteria vine, honeysuckle,
petunias, impatients, spiderworts, cosmos, begonias, lilac bush, wild
phlox

July:::::::tall phlox, ballon flowers, red hot pokers, hibiscus,
dalhia, cleome, zinna, merigold, some angel trumpets, periwinkles
canna, pink pampas grass, crepe myrtles.

*hollyhocks are an early spring bloomer, but I can get one to live long
enough to bloom (but I'm not giving up on them).I've got 4 plants alive
right now, we'll see what happens
*this next spring will be my first time for ginger so don't know
about this one
*this will be my first time for the crinums bulbs, but according to the
article I read some start as early as May, but I don't know what kind
I have so will have to wait and see. I have set out 8 bulbs already and
have 2 more babies to go. I was lucky on these, got them at the old
home place that belonged to my husbands, grandparents that is over 100
years old.

of course this does not include the pot plants that I have everywhere
with differant kinds of plants (annuals mostly) my husband says that I
will plant a flower in anything that will hold potting soil. I have 5
large cast iron old fashion wash pots and I fill them full of
everything.
lantanas, geranium, petunias, impatients, some of my calla lilies,
salvia, rose moss, angel trumpets, mandevillas, dwarf canna, ivy and
vines (vinca minor), I love to mix and match in my larger pots.

this past summer we suffered the worse drought that I can remember, of
course we were not alone, a lot of people in differant parts of the
country had it worse than us, but I lost some of my plants, and the
ones that survived didn't do very well. I managed to keep some alive
by the grace of "God" and saving water. Right now all I have in bloom
are pansy and mums and a few petunias and impatients. I have been doing
the winter clean up. storing bulbs, mulching, and so on and so on.
Maybe next year will be a good year "weather wise" for all of us

Oh ! I have one other plant that I just remembered. it's a new
addition this year. It's a
fringe tree. don't know anything about it. thought it was neat and
had to have one. I understand it blooms several times each season.
I've noticed on 3 differant occasions throughout the season, that
I've had a few blooms, but not many

I also have plants that I don't what they are, because they have been
given by friends and relatives, and sometime they don't know what they
are, but that's ok

well I should shut up. I will swear that I never sent this post
because I know that some of this info is incorrect. the time frame is
off on some of this. but it was a hit and miss effort.
"remember I warned you" next year I'm gonna keep a record of
bloom-times. provided I can remember.

happy gardening to one and all.
