Hi,
I read somewhere in one of my many gardening books that you should leave
the dried foliage up on Aster MONCH until spring because it is a tender
perennial...has anyone else heard that? I already cut mine down to the
basal foliage when I moved it a couple of months ago. It bloomed for me
this year, but the stems were spindly and it fell all over and just looked
ratty most of the summer. I have another very tall, at least 5', that has
lots of small buds on top, but has still not bloomed. I think it is called
'Elliots' Aster'. This is the first year that I have grown it and am still
waiting to see its flowers.
One of my favorites for fall are the ornamental grasses. One of mine,
miscanthus MORNING LIGHT, is just a beautiful thing. Its leaves are narrow
and it is smaller than most other grasses, growing about 3-4'. The fronds
are a dusty pink. I have a mum that is in full bloom...very light peachy
pink blooms...think it is called 'Hillside Pink'. One of my phlox
paniculata is still going...Nikky with magenta flowers...looks great behind
the artemesia. There is also the ever dependable Kalimeris pinnatifida,
double Japanese aster....has been blooming nonstop for months and months
with no deadheading. And, one of the wonderful surprises for fall are the
reblooming irises. I have several into their second bloom now, including
one that I just planted in July...a Historic called ELEANOR ROOSEVELT
(1933). We are just starting to have some cold nights here, so I hope none
of the iris buds gets frozen one of these nights!
