Re: fallopia japonica 'variegata'
Barb's find has the name given to the invasive
kind of Japanese knotweed. As Louise says, it is a serious problem in the UK.
Difficulty is that Barb's may not be the invasive kind we here are warned of. I
rang John Carter, who has the National Collection of Polygonum (fallopia family
is polygonaceae). He said to check if your plant of the same name connects with
Dan Heims? If so, it is commonly known as Milk boy and doesn't invade.
Unfortunately both are at present named alike. Mr Carter specializes in
damp-loving and aquatic plants and knows how to contain the other sort, but
considering what a disaster its unchecked spread in Britain has proved, that's a
responsibility! Hope yours is Milk boy.
