As with many plants, location means a lot.  Here in Wisconsin (Zone 5 
and less), the tree is much less of a problem.  I have a mature one 
on my north lot line (a male, I believe) and it has never shown any 
tendency to sucker.  There are females nearby and are, in late 
summer, rather attractive with their reddish seed clusters IMHO.   As 
far as seedlings go, the local maples and mulberry are much worse. 
Smell?  No worse than black walnut.  I'd take one of these in 
preference to a box elder (Acer negundo) any day.



Still, they are considered a "weed tree" with soft wood and there are 
certainly better trees to plant in most situations
