Hi, Gene:
Being in the same boat on grasses as you are, I winnowed down a list of
recommended reference books on grasses and selected:
"The Color Encyclopedia of Ornamental Grasses" by Rick Darke (1999, Timber
Press, 325 pages, $49.95)
The jacket flap says Mr. Darke is a "landscape design consultant, author and
photographer based in Landenberg, PA. He was a member of Longwood Gardens'
staff for 20 years, first as Assistant Taxonomist and then as Curator of
Plants....
He received the Scientific Award of the American Horticultural Society in
1998 which honors individuals who have enriched horticulture through
outstanding and notable research. Darke is an internationally recognized
expert on ornamental grasses and a frequent writer and lecturer on this
subject....and served as consulting editor for the Royal Horticultural
Society's Manual of Grasses."
The other small guide I purchased through the U. of Minnesota and it's,
geared for those in colder zones than your z.6, Gene, but still useful and I
recommend it.
But, my best resource for my nitty gritty questions has been our very own
co-list-member and esteemed author at Suite 101, Marge Talt.
Hope all this helps - and I'd be very interested to hear what you ultimately
select for
Munchkin Nursery.
