Karen, you do not say which area of the country. We once had a mouse eat
through a hose on a truck and disable the truck for days until it was
discovered. He was living in the truck.
What I would like to say on chipmunks and squirrels is that they are
attracted to disturbed soil. When you plant bulbs in the fall, if you cover
the patch with a few bricks or a slate until the ground freezes there is
usually no loss. This does not apply to voles. When you plant a new
perennial that may attract them, you could surround the plant with something
solid for a few weeks and the attraction would lessen.
Voles are underground pests and they can exact some toll. I am constantly
surprised by what they will eat apart from lilies and hostas.
