I don't know anything about this particular plant but I looked it up and
found that it blooms on current year's wood so the rule of thumb would be to
prune it in early spring. The definition of early spring varies from climate
to climate, but my guess would be that June 1 was too late to pinch it back
without destroying the developing flower buds. --Janis
