Ruellia humilis is native to the Nebraska prairies), as well as points south and east.  Friends in Nebraska (Zone 4a) say it's a reasonably common wildflower.  It prefers dry soils and sharp drainage which is probably why it's not more commonly offered or grown.  I grow mine on the bone-dry east side of the house. 
 
Prairie Nursery offers it in their catalogue.
