Sorry to confuse you. The references I have classify Anisacanthus as a genus
of deciduous shrubs or subshrubs. There is not a lot of information on this
plant, and I'm not growing it, so forget the books and what I said. If your
plant dies back to the ground each winter then it is herbaceous. Does it?
In any case, I still suspect that pruning your plant through June 1st might
have been part of your problem. You said it grew a lot after you pinched it.
That makes sense because if a plant doesn't have to produce flowers it has a
lot more energy to grow. Desert honeysuckle sounds wonderful. Hope it
blooms and blooms for you next year! --Janis
