Re: water garden
Nancy,
We put a pond in our backyard this summer and really love it. The first
one we used was a pre-formed unit we got at Home Depot, which looked alot
bigger in the store than when we got it home. Ours is part of an island
bed. That one was relatively easy to install, but we really got interested
in having fish and just the whole pond thing. So, on the 4th. of July my
husband started digging and when he was done by the next day ours was/is 28'
long, variable 5'-8'wide, and 3'deep. We used a rubber liner. The first
mistake we did was try and use a liner that had been pieced together and
that ended up leaking, so if you are going that route make sure you get all
one piece liner. Phil also built a waterfall at one end of the pond.
I have really enjoyed learning about a whole new set of plants that I
had never used before. We have about 5 water lilies and most of them
bloomed. They are neat in that they bloom during the day and then close at
night. We also have pickeral weed that has blue spikey flowers. A taro
plant with black and green leaves is another favorite. It is my
understanding that water lilies can be placed on the bottom of the pond for
the winter, but more tropical plants need to be taken inside.
A great resource that we used alot is *The American Horticultural
Society's Complete Guide To Water Gardening: Design, Construction,
Planting, Maintenance* by Peter Robinson. It is full of color pictures
showing construction, plants, fish, everything you might need to know.
I have pictures of our pond and the waterfall if anyone would like to
see them. Just email me privately and I'll send them to you.
