some questions

Hi,

I'm new to this list and have enjoyed all the comments, and saw some answers
to a few things I wondered about, such as is Abutilon perennial or not.
Guess it's not and I should bring in to see if I can overwinter in the
basement. This is zone 5 and some things are not hardy here that could be
in the southern part of the state.

I added a lot of new things to my gardens this year and some were sold as
perennial and I'm not sure if they really ARE or if they are really annuals
or tender perennial.

Some of them are:

1. Plumbago Auriculata. medium blue blossoms whereas another variety I
have that's definitely perennial and hardy has deeper blue flowers. I was
told this might not be a perennial variety.

2. Persicaria filiformis (Polygonum). It has long thin stems with tiny
insignificant red "petals". Is this all there is to the "bloom". How
hardy is it?

3. Lobelia Gerardii vedrariensis Is this really a perennial (I paid
perennial price!) since I've never seen a perennial blue lobelia before.

4. Salvia Guaranticia This definitely has a perennial look and gorgeous
deep blue blossoms but I was told it is an annual. It is taller than any of
the perennial salvias I have. I'd really like to keep this going for next
year.

5. The tag for herb Lemon Verbena (Aloysia Triphylla) says "perennial" but
I've never had one survive the winter. Are there any steps I can take to
protect it so that it will return next year? Love the scent on these.

6. Caryopteris Clandonensis (Blue Mist Spirea Bluebeard). I added 2 of
these recently. This spring I lost the one I planted last year when a
sudden frost just as it was leafing out did it in. It not only killed the
new tender leaves that were emerging...the entire plant died. Are there any
steps I can take to protect these 2 from a repeat of what happened this
year?

7. After 3 attempts & failures in getting autumn clematis going, it looks
as if I have success this year.
The vine has grown nicely and is even blooming. This is Clematis terniflora
(Sweet Autumn Clematis). I was especially impressed with this in someone
else's yard because of the intense fragrance. However, I find my blossoms
have absolutely no fragrance. Does anyone know WHY and what I can do about
it?

8. Is Althaea "Zebrina" perennial or a self-seeder?
This is the little pink variety striped plum-colored stripes.

I think I've asked too much for one message but inquiring minds do like to
know. :-)
