I grew 3 plants of n. sylvestris last summer in a small bed that is
basically all compost - it's where we dump stuff at the end of the
summer when cutting down, and then clean in out in the spring. East sun
only, not much extra water. These plants were magnificent - I agree with
Claire that they appeal to men a lot, but I like the look of a specimen
plant or two with big bold leaves as a contrast and foil to all the
other bitty stuff - gives quite a punch (not dinner plate dahlias tho').
These plants were extremely fragrant, especially on warm humid evenings
- fragrance seemed to increase with humidity. They bloomed almost 'til
frost, with a little trimming of the dead flowers & stems. In generally,
I think a little shade enhances fragrance, especially in hot climates.
