I resent the implications about roses, since I wouldn't have a hybrid tea on
the place if I had my way. Any that have been planted are strictly as the
result of female influences and I have killed them off as quickly as
possible. The same with dinner plate dahlias which I somehow forget to dig
up and store.
While roses are not on topic for this list, dahlias at least qualify as
tender perennials. I thought I would throw in some of my picks for garden
worthy dahlias this year.
Both Bishop of Llandaff and Japanese Bishop are (I think) still hot plants,
but all of the following have dark foliage as well and can be used very
effectively in a hot coloured border. Mine come from Ferncliff Gardens in
British Columbia (who also have a good range of peonies). This company also
sells to the US. I'm not sure about shipping and such but with the current
state of the Canadian dollar buying from them may be attractive.
David's Choice- 4 foot tall plant, four inch scarlet flowers (formal
decorative)
Midnight Sun- 4.5 foot tall plant, five inch yellow flowers (formal
decorative)
Moonfire-3.5 foot plants, four inch single tangerine flowers.
Ellen Houston 16 inch plants with orange flowers about 3.5 inches across-and
lots of them. Good toward the front of the border.
Preston Park- 30 inch plants with scarlet single flowers about 3-4" (size
may vary-it has on my plants).
All of these plants are capable of standing without staking like the giant
varieties so beloved of exhibitors, and I think the foliage is very
attractive.
