From a zone 4 gardener like you, try throwing 5-10-5 on the vinca in the
early spring. That makes a tighter patch. The vari forms need a few years
to become thick.
<<<<Phlox divaricata===>Never thick enough to be a groundcover for me>>>>>>>
Me either. However, there are newer phlox forms in the rock garden catalogs
that are wonderful in the shade and very aggressive.
<<<<Pulmonaria 'Mrs. Moon' - really covers large patches of assorted
ground -seeds around. I leave it unless it gets in my way.===>Must not be
happy here, as it has never seeded for me. In fact, I don't recall that any
pulmonaria has done so.>>>>
Mine did not either until one spring about four or five years ago and now it
is a pest as a grand clump mildews
<<<<Brunnera macrophylla - also seeds around.===>Ditto. Although I have kept
the
variegated form going for a number of years when others seem to fail.>>>>
I can't find a single one that I have planted.
<<<<<Symphytum grandifloria===>Would not want to be without this plant.>>>>
How tall are your plants?
<<<<< Begonia grandis===>Not rampant enough here for a ground cover.>>>>
Does not survive here, Bill you must have some magic in your fingers or our
altitude is the difference.
<<<<Lunaria annua===>Have not found the right spot for this yet--it has
never
reached blooming stage before dying for me. Everyone else seems able to
grow it though.>>>>
What you want to do is absolutely litter the spot with seed. We cleaned
(what a job) a bunch to contribute to an affair this weekend and have a
bushel of seed. Send me your address privately and I will send you all you
like. The bloom was terrific this spring. This is biennial and you must not
weed out the plants the first year.
A good subject.
