Perennials in pots

This year I decided to be thrifty and use some of my many perennials in
my large pottery pots around my shade garden to see if the Heucheras
would behave better with no competition from trees roots. I can tell
you that they did very well in the pots. I put painted ferns,
ophiopogon, small Japanese maples, Carex and other perennials together
for different colors, forms, and textures. The large tompot(green
glaze) that was the best had Revolution Hosta, a silver painted fern,
and a black ophiopogon. The hosta had dark green flakes in the white
that matched the black grass.
Since the pots do not hold up well to the winter freezes I will lift all
the perennials out and place in the ground and mulch. The pots go into
dry storage for the winter. I grouped 7 miniature hostas in plastic
short but large pots. I will just put these pots on the ground and
mulch around the pots. I also will have to put some wire on the top
since the voles love my hostas and it takes a long time to find the
small jewels. I think the little hostas show up better if they are all
together in a large pot.

I found some cheap Styrofoam pots that I planted Japanese maples
seedlings in with annuals. I think I will try some to see if the trees
will survive the winter with just mulch around these pots.
If it is a cold winter it will be interesting to see just what does
survive and on to what we can do differently next spring.
