Re: containers

All this advice is valid except for one important element - rodents. I
have been storing my hostas and other perennials outdoors, all winter long
with no protection at all, even in cold New England. But the mice, voles
and rabbits are a problem in the non-growing seasons.

Before you close the plants up for the winter, be sure to set mouse traps
around the edges of your potted plants that are gathered together. You
should also place some baits in the center of the grouping. The baits are
for the smart mice and voles that avoid the traps. Be especially careful
when you use the leaf mulch, hay/straw bales techniques, because the
rodents find these very attractive for a temporary winter residence.
Covering the plants with plastic or landscape fabric, while it is a good
idea, also encourages winter protection for rodents.
