Beth, I give containers classes, programs and I am a container designer in a
greenhouse that is only open 2 months in the spring. I love to use a mixed
combination of annuals, perennials, tropicals, bulbs, grasses, houseplants,
etc. Some of my favorite perennials I use in containers are Heuchera , Hosta
, Ferns, Carex, Pulmonaria, Sedum, Salvia, Lysimachia, Vinca, Artemisia,
Ajuga and anything that gives the color, form and texture desired. Many
annual plants I use may be perennial to warmer climates but are termed annual
in our cold climate. Because I am in a cold climate, as you are, I plant them
in the garden at the end of the season.
Of course, the larger the container the better. This reduces the
watering requirement.
