Hello Donna,
    Everyone has their own sense of what looks right to them.... but... I
hate the thought of mature hosta being divided and chopped up. Takes years
to get a hosta to look like a mature hosta... then everyone wants to dig
them up and chop them apart. How about simply digging every other one up and
moving it to where there is more space? Then you have space for something
more than hosta riding on top of each other. They look better with something
as companions besides other hosta.
    Kind of a personal thing.....
