RE: Speaking of hostas....

Len, go into more detail of how you actually divide these plants once out of the ground. I LITERALLY cannot get a shovel in. Is it a strength issue I suspect?

Donna, as an avid hostaholic, I love collecting hostas and showing them
off in my garden. I am also a Landscape Architect, so design is very
important to me.

After many trials and errors in the garden, I have found that the plants
look best as specimens, with lots of mulch around them so you can show off
their individual beauty. This approach also works well for developing
specimen plants which I love to photograph and use in Hosta Magazine. I
try to place the large plants near the back of the garden and use the
mini's as an edger.

This design trend flies in the face of those who like to grow companion
plants in their hosta garden. Design is a very personal subject, so what
I think looks good to me, may not look good to my spouse or anyone else
for that matter.

To answer your questions on divisions, since I also have a small nursery,
I do a lot of dividing. I have found it easiest to dig up the entire
clump and divide it into single plants or small clumps. I then plant a
bunch of the small plants back into improved soil to recreate the specimen
and pot up the extras for plant sales or trading. Trying to separate the
eyes while the entire plant is left in the ground is just too much work
and IMHO causes more harm than digging the entire plant up.

I'm sure this thread is going to get a lot of response.
