tucking in plants

I have gotten a good laugh from those of you who say you
just "tuck in" a plant here or there - you make it sound
so easy! In my case it would be more like pry and heave
and hack and chip and blast! to get anything in the
ground here. When it's not an absolute brick as it
usually is all summer, the incredibly tough grass puts
up a heck of a fight. Things in shade are
barely surviving, but those that don't bloom unless they
are in sun - are burning up. Still discovering things
that died while I was gone & SO forgot to water them.
Siberian iris. Clematis. I think I've saved my astilbe
by punching a hole in a jug next to it & filling it
every morning. And the dahlia that died to the ground
is re-sprouting. Maybe it still has time to make enough
bulb to save & bloom next year. Those of you who can
just "tuck" - I'm green with envy!
