Hello Doug,
Right you are. I picked up Hosta 'Red October' at a garden fair in
northern Indiana this spring when doing a presentation and lecture. About
$15 to $18 in gallon size. Had multiple eyes, so has made a nice display...
not a mature display, but a nice start since this spring. The stems are
loosing some of the red color as the season wears on.... but then, so am I.
Prices on hosta.... one needs to watch... there are dealers who will
never allow more than one eye in a pot or division for sale. Others will
allow just about any number of eyes in a pot if it has sat around for a
while. Some base their price on a hosta book that makes the rounds (can't
remember the name now, but it contains suggested average prices for hosta)
A few will intentionally undersell, while many who belong to the hosta
society national will be right on the mark price-wise.
I once had the experience of picking up a pot in a nursery that was in
the sales area and taking it to the owner. He immediately dumped the pot and
divided it, holding one eye aside to place back in the pot and sell to me
(there were 3 in the pot). I stepped on my jaw getting to the car. My car
was so embarrassed it will not make the return trip.
