Barbara, I just completed dividing my sedum. I do it every fall without a
single problem.
As for separating them, it depends on the cultivar you are doing. The
ground cover sedums, while they are still in the ground, you can cut with
a shovel to the size of your container. You might have a few losses on
the edges but they will be minor and by spring the plant will be fully
recovered. If you want to do some major propagating, I would cut the last
4 inches off of the growing end of each stem and pot them up separately.
The upright sedums like Autumn Joy, divide themselves. I just lift the
mother plants out of the ground and the babies fall right away. If you
want to do some major propagating you can divide the mother plant by
cutting the crown apart so each new plant has a stem or two and some
roots.
