There is a small thorny pink rose called "The Fairy" which is popular in New
York because it does not die in winter as many others do regularly.
This is such a great rose! It makes the prettiest bouquets, no disease and
is very tough.
I have one that is ~30 years old....it was here when I came and I have moved
it twice.
It is very, very shade tolerant and a profuse bloomer.
All of my Viburnums except two or three are grown from cuttings.
They are indeed easy to root and very rewarding because they are vigorous
growers.
Only 2 seasons from rooted cuttings to 2 gallon pot size. Not to mention
they are incredibly beautiful!
A final note on propagating shrubs. I think if you add shrubs to all
garden,
flowering or varigated shrubs, you will as you grow older have flowering
plants needing little care as you the perennials shrink from care needed.
That was my plan or sort of plan and I have amazed myself at what I can do
with cuttings.
I'm with you Claire, I have been propagating/growing more shrubs/vines &
fewer perennials
every year as I get older. They certainly are less labor intensive and with
a little planning, one can
have shrubs blooming in the garden every month of the year. My Viburnum
bodnatense 'Dawn' begins
blooming about Thanksgiving and continues through the winter along with
Daphne, Heaths, Sarcococca, the
sasanqua Camellias and Ribes sanguineum. You folks in New England also have
a beautiful autumn display
of leaf color that we don't get in the warmer climates.
