What you have to do is place some lattice work or chicken wire across the 
front of your garage for the vine to cling.  Also you will have to get on a 
ladder and wire tie it to the lattice for a while.  Vines do not go where you 
direct unfortunately.  I think you are in a friendly zone for this clematis, 
it takes winter damage here and often needs to be cut back to the soil line.

Marge is right, they will go spinning around in the air without some control 
and land where you do not want them.  I have an entire small tree full of an 
no-name purple clematis, a small flowered purple that goes anywhere it likes. 
 It is too high now to control so if you really want it on line across the 
front of your garage, tie it in place the first several years or clip the 
unwanted extensions.  Vines need training if you want a particular look.
