FWIW -
Don't give up on Elymus (was mentioned in "2 grasses for shade") because it
runs aggressively. There are clumping forms to look for. These seem to be
short-lived perennials for sun, though I think are only hardy for zones 7 &
8 according to AHS Encyclopedia of Garden Plants from A-Z. The color is so
wonderful that it would be worth it to use as an annual if you can find it.
Elymus magellanicus is pictured here:

Elymus hispidus looks very similar
(Do a google search for images - the web addresses are impossible!)
This year I discovered Elymus tenuis which is the same stunning silvery blue
but swirling totally prostrate on the ground. Three plants covered a 6'
triangle in a corner which cried out for a bold purple structural thing
rising out of it! (Mabe a canna next year?) Looks like it set alot of seed
though; these stems and seed turn pale beige.
