This is best done in the spring and early summer. Grasses for the most part
need a month or so of active growth before they will over winter well. They
are warm season plants and its starting to cool down-so you will not get much
root growth now.
If you can I would wait till next spring to divide up your clump-other wise
plant deeply and mulch well this fall.
