Certainly you could add some annuals, and should. Batchelor Buttons might
be a useful choice. I have some in my bed and they have been blooming
nicely all summer (blues, whites and pinks). Snapdragons are probably
another good choice, especially if you are in a position to start them from
seed. I grew some of the old fashioned tall ones ( 30"+) last year and
they gave me lots of colour until the frost did them in. But you might
also want to consider adding some other perennials. Campanula carpatica (
Carpathian Bellflower) comes in blue and white. Mine have been flowering
since the first week of July. I still have some flowers left on my
peach-leafed bellflower and balloon flowers (blues and white for
both-balloon flower has a pink as well). Purple coneflower is also a good
choice-more pink than purple, as well as a white-but I prefer the purple
version. Mine started flowering in early August and will keep it up for a
couple of weeks more. And of course there are the asters and mums in a
variety of colours. Plus, some perennials, like the hardy geraniums,
change leaf colour in the fall which is quite pretty, and then the sedum
"Autumn Joy", and a really nice burgundy colored one I can't remember the
name of at the moment- leaves, flowers and stems all burgundy. Still have
phlox in bloom at the moment too, although not likely for much longer. You
might try more roses, too. Mine are finally blooming their fool heads off
after a very slow dry summer. All this in USDA zone 4.
