Re: Annuals in Perennial Beds

This is in reply to cramer @ pld.com:

I, too, use annuals in my borders. Let's face it -- it's hard to keep
perennials blooming all summer and keep a "lush" look. However, I have a
question: how many of each plant do you have? You'd be surprised at the
difference it can make in your border if you have about three - five of
each plant instead of just one. Plus, we all know that a new border can
look like hell the first year or so until the plants mature. The annual
plant suggestions posed to you from other list members are excellent
choices for your color scheme.

As far as your designing concerns go, I've read about master gardeners that
are continuously trying to "perfect" their gardens after 10+ years! To me,
that's one of the best parts about gardening: you are never finished.
There is always a new way to arrange your plants, try new ones, etc. Try
going to either your library or to a good local bookstore and spend some
time thumbing through gardening books. When you find something you like,
ask yourself "why"? You obviously like certain colors, but focus on the
design of what you like. Do they repeat certain plants through the border?
Are there some really good combinations that appeal to you? Do they
incorporate garden structures such as arbors, arches, bird baths, urns,
benches, statues? Try doing just a section at a time if the task seems too
daunting. My husband laughs at me and says that we'll end up paying off
our mortgage before I ever get my garden to look the way I want it -- but
I'll just see about that...
