Cut them close to the ground. If you break them off you may damage 
the crown and make a mess of next years growth. Be nice to them.

This is interesting isn't it. We want to multiply our plants so we 
divide them !!
I do not divide as our mild climate encourages disease. It is a far 
better practice for us to take cuttings in the spring...which we have 
just been doing. I have taken photos and will have some pics on the 
web page, I hope, soon. As for division, when is this normally done 
in the States. Feb / March or maybe early winter ?
