Robin, Im also in the pacific northwest (Bellevue) and I think we are more
zone 8 than zone 6/ regarding your hardpan if its three feet down, you are
lucky!! Mine is about one foot down. Here's the rule I follow when planting
bulbs.. anytime in the fall as long as its before Thanksgiving. In fact one
year we ended up planting 250 bulbs on Thanksgiving day, were we glad when
it was time for dinner. The key that I've found with bulbs is to much sure
you put them at the proper planting depth.. probably 6 inches with
daffodils and sprinkle some BONE meal in the planting hole. The crocus can
be planted much shallower. The rule of thumb is twice the depth of the bulb
size.. so tiny ones are very shallow. The daffs I have that are at the
proper depth bloom much better than the ones I just threw into a 3 inch
hold. Good luck.
