It depends how you intend to keep them in the interim. You can stick them in
pots of soil or heel them in piles of dirt. Or you can prepare them as you
would for shipping. that is, cut them back to about 6", wash all the dirt off
the roots then ship asap. ther are a couple of theories for shipping. some
people ship them in damp newspaper (wrapped around the roots) (the worry here
is mold or mildew). Others, probably done more often ship them dry root.
Another alternative that will give them a boost in root growth, is to plant
them in moist (but with drainage) sand until you are ready to plant them in the
garden. The roots take off like wildfire, & its the best start you could want
for your plants. I recommend this method.
