Re: Parthenogenesis vs. cleistogamy

Jeanne:

I was originally going to talk to you about cleistogamy &
parthenogenesis, but did not want to get too technical.

I am pleased, however, that Don brought it up so that I can tell you
more about Violas, which are one of the most amazing examples of
cleistogamy that I know of; exhibited most dramatically in their first
season from seed.

Many species of first year seedlings of true Violas will not flower at
all their first year, or will do so only late in the season.
Nevertheless they will start producing seed capsules, long before I
ever even get them out of their pots, like it were their last moment
on earth, in great profusion & non stop the entire season. Not only
that, but these same Violas, planted out early, get busy with this
crazy seed production (without flower) & before mid-season there are
new seedlings everywhere from this first season non flowering seed
production frenzy.....

My Viola jooii has just started flowering this week after months of
producing enough seed for me to carry in my next seed catalogue. A
seedwomans dream.

I still maintain, however, if these fluffy seeds are coming from the
lobelia, then you do not have a lobelia.
